About the new sluice house

Lock 68 in Shawmont

The Philadelphia Water Department has a major project to build a new sluice area (where the water enters the canal) to increase water flow and the environmental health of the canal as a waterway.

While the canal will never function again, the remains of the Upper Lock 68 will be stabilized, historically preserved and three of the old sluice ways also preserved.  A drive area for maintenance purposes will be built on Venice Island.
