The Lauriston Pocket Park is at the intersection of Lauriston and Vicaris Streets in the Wissahickon neighborhood. It is a city lot that borders Fairmount Park.
Over the years, illegal dumping, invasive trees/plants blocked the view and led to illegal drug activity. School children walking to Cook Wissahickon were finding used needles/syringes along Vicaris Street.
In Spring 2017, a small number of neighbors organized & worked together to clean it out. We received help from the Philadelphia Most Beautiful Committee. We also bought wood chips, soil, and native plants. Neighbors donated a bench and we planted native trees. We made a path through the lot for walkers, runners, and school children providing a safer route along that section of Vicaris St.
In Spring 2019, the park was added to the Roxborough Manayunk Conservancy.
Check out the article in The Times Herald about the recent clean-up.
