About fountain street steps

These steps at Fountain and Umbria Streets are remarkable!

They connect Umbria Street to the Manayunk trail underneath two RR bridges and to Venice Island where jobs existed in the factories and mills. Twenty plus years ago neighbors, led by Blaise Syrnick, began to clean and monitor this area against folks hanging out.

The artist, Paul Santoleri was brought in through the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program to work under the bridges and the work grew to encompass a mosaic waterfall down the steps and oversized butterflies and other creatures.  The creation of an artistic wonderland planted with native plant material  - has created an unique art and plant experience in the heart of Manayunk.
